meta means about, so meta tags are tags that describe a web page. These are used by search engines to provide descriptions of websites, and are part of the HTML of the webpage. You should place meta tags at the top of your HTML, in between the <head> and </head> tags

What meta tags should I use?

There are 2 basic meta tags that you should include in your HTML if you want to add your website to search engines. These are description and keywords.

What is the description meta tag?

This provides the search engine with a description of your website. The format is <meta name="description" content="This is a description of my website">

What is the keywords meta tag?

The keywords meta tag provides the search engine with a list of words to reference when someone types a word into the search engine. The word is then checked against the keywords meta tag, and if a match is found, then the search engine knows to display a link to that web page.

The format is <meta name="keywords" content="put, some, words, that, describe, your, website, in, here, seperated, by, a, comma">
