What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Its the method used to transfer files from one computer to another. In most cases this is from a computer to a web server.
These instructions apply to hosting ONLY accounts and not to sites that have been designed by Webdimension. If Webdimension have designed your website, you will not need any additional software and FTP access.
I don't have any FTP software, how do I upload my site?
There are many programs available on the web, CuteFTP for the PC is ideal for beginners,
Alternatively there is WSFTP for more advanced users or for Mac users there's Fetch
What settings should I use in my FTP program?
These are the settings that should be used:
Host Name: your-domain-name.com
Username: username
Password: password
Default Directory: /web
Your ftp client will then begin its session in the correct directory.
Where can I find my FTP details?
FTP details are sent out by e-mail 15 - 30 minutes after hosting accounts being ordered.
If you have not received these details please contact Webdimension.
Where do I upload my files when using FTP?
When using FTP all files should be uploaded to /web (the 'web' directory in the site root)
If you are not logged into that directory by default, you will need to navigate to the site root then into the 'web' directory before uploading your files. If you do not have a visual FTP client that allows you to do this, then you should set the default remote directory as /web
What should I call my default page?
The first page of your website should always be called index.html
Many web design programs call the first page index.htm by default, this is fine but you must ensure you delete the default index.html file on the server before uploading the file.
If you are designing in ASP or PHP, then you can also use index.asp or index.php
Please note that the filename "index" must be all in lower case
