What is an IPS Tag?
A Tag is a unique identifier allocated to a Tag Holder with Nominet.UK. Nominet.UK are the registrar for .uk domain names.
A Tag Holder means anyone that applies to Nominet to process Domain Name applications through Nominet's automated registration system - the Automaton. There are application charges and annual renewal charges to be a Tag Holder.
Does the IPS Tag relate to all suffixes?
No, IPS Tags only relate to domain names ending in .uk
Do you charge me if I transfer my .uk domain away to another provider?
If you are simply changing the name server information there is no charge.
If you are changing the IPS Tag to a new provider then there is a fee of £10 plus VAT, payable before the domain is transferred.
With .uk domains, what is the difference between changing nameservers and changing the IPS Tag?
When you change nameservers on a .uk domain name, you are not transferring the domain name away from the IPS Tag holder. You are simply changing the servers that control where your domain name points to.
Changing the IPS Tag completely transfers the domain name to another Tag holder. The IPS Tag holder has complete control over the domain name. These are the people who make nameserver changes and who you pay your 2-yearly renewal for the name to.
Therefore if your new provider's charges to renew the domain name are more expensive than ours, you can just change the name server information to point to your new provider and keep the domain on our IPS Tag.
How do I transfer my domain name away?
The options available to you will depend on the domain you are transferring e.g. you will be given the option to change the TAG on your .uk domain but as TAG's only relate to anything .uk this option will not be shown for other suffixes.
How do I change the Legal Registrant on my domain?
.uk domains. You will need to contact Nominet, the .uk Registry, to request a transfer form. This form will need to be signed by both parties and sent back to Nominet with confirmatory letters from both parties. Nominet will then make the necessary changes and advise us accordingly. There is a fee payable to Nominet.
Finally, if you require a new account, for the new owner, to be opened and the domain transferred into that account please let us know. Otherwise the domain will remain on your account and you will be responsible for any future renewals for the domain.
What is the need for primary and secondary name server information?
A secondary name server is required in case the primary name server fails. If the primary name server was to crash your website would become unavailable. So every domain has at least one backup name server.
